British Columbia (BC) - Canada’s, westernmost province with over 10,000 miles of coastline fronting the Pacific Ocean. “Supernatural British Columbia”, the slogan of BC Tourism, is no idle boast.

BC Sailing - The provincial sailing authority, affiliated to the Canadian Yachting Association. Promotes and monitors sailing instruction and development on the West Coast.

Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) - The CYA had a name change in 2013. It is now Sail Canada. It's the quasi-governmental Canadian national sailing body affiliated to the International Sailing Federation (ISF), and responsible for setting internationally recognized training standards.

Cruise and Learn - The term used to describe a method of sail training where the student lives aboard the vessel and learns both practice and theory while taking part in a sailing cruise over several days.

Desolation Sound - A beautiful cruising ground 100 miles north of Vancouver, just east of Campbell River, and marking the northern end of the Gulf of Georgia. Exquisite mountain backdrop.

Learn to Cruise -The Sail Canada division dealing with the training of sailors for cruising keel boats.

Learn to Sail - The CYA division dealing with teaching dinghy sailing (as opposed to keel boats as above). In a nutshell, keel boats are decked and provide accommodation. Dinghies are small, wet, exciting and turn upside down!

Sailing School - Certain schools are recognised by the CYA and BC Sailing as meeting their standards of instruction and conduct. They are empowered by them to confer their certification on students who meet the necessary standards. Bewley Sailing is such a school.

Sail Training - A term often associated with the teaching of youngsters on large square rigged sailing ships. We use the term as being synonomous with Sailing Instruction generally, and apply it to all forms of sailing craft.
